You don’t need to spend much time in Austin to recognize the general sense of optimism that exists about the future of our city. The material presented by Ryan Robinson, the Austin city demographer, in our February 26 meeting helped see why that optimism exists. The trends from the last fifty years show how Austin has been able to thrive even in the face of more difficult times.
But our city is not without it’s challenges. Mr. Robinson’s data showed how different the lifestyles of Austin residents can be, with widening economic and ethnic gaps. The data he shared with us, plus much more, is available on the city’s demographics webpage. (For those who are part of PlantR, we hope to make notes and his slides available to you via email soon.)
I was captivated by Mr. Robinson’s passion for the city. What he brought was not just data, but genuine care and concern for Austin. It affected me, and I’m sure it did others. I left with questions about how our church community could hold the same care and concern as we live as followers of Jesus in Austin. And those seem like exactly the questions for us to be asking.
